Tropical Sunrise Smoothie with Spinach

Good morning friends. We have been experimenting with our new Vitamix.  When it comes to smoothies the sky is the limit. Smoothies have come a long way over the years. You can add anything your imagination can think of such as kale, spinach, berries, bananas, dates, cucumber, ginger, watermelon, yogurt, nut butters, oats, chia seeds, bee pollen, hemp hearts, etc. Smoothies can be a great way to start your day and/or increase your vegetable intake by adding a handful of one of your favourite green leafy vegetables. So go ahead and start your morning off with a nutrient dense refreshing tropical sunrise smoothie. To add a nice refreshing taste to my creation,  I snuck in some mint last minute.

GREEN SMOOTHIE

Miss E and Q love smoothies. I am always looking for ways to increase our vegetable intake, especially when it comes to green leafy greens. On a recent trip to Wholefoods, I decided to get the girls a smoothie, I tried to convince them that my kale smoothie was delicious. If you have a toddler in your house you probably know that the color green doesn’t always go over that well.  I decided to add spinach instead of kale because it has a milder flavour but you can easily replace the spinach with kale or do half and half.  Spinach is rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, as well as vitamins A, C and K. Spinach is also an excellent source of lutein, an antioxidant linked to lower levers of macular degeneration. Spinach is found on the EWG‘s dirty dozen list and recommend buying organic spinach whenever possible to reduce your consumption of pesticides.  No wonder Popeye loved it so much. To stay productive and full all morning long I added hemp hearts for extra fibre and protein. This tropical sunrise smoothie with spinach got the stamp of approval from my honest smoothie loving 5 year old.
