The Secret to Homemade Pizza

The Secret to Homemade Pizza

Pizza is a family favorite in our house.  We have a great pizza place in our neighbourhood which we regularly visit. My must haves are thin crust, fresh ingredients, and minimal toppings. This past weekend I decided to make my own after seeing these mouth watering flatbreads from foodiecrush. To be honest, I don’t have a lot of patience when it comes making dough which is why I would prefer take out to homemade.  But this recipe from the kitchn totally caught my eye. Quick and no rising involved. Now that’s what I call a winner.

Our summer has been so warm that there was no way I was going to heat up the oven, instead we used the bbq. My husband thought I was crazy when I suggested we grill the pizza. I found  step by step instructions on the kitchen. Thanks to the high heat, you’ll make some of the best pizza. Plus your house stays cool and you can still get a good night sleep. That is if you don’t have the kiddies calling out in the middle of night, I can dream.

We made two pizza’s that night and used this tomato sauce as the base but arugula pesto would also make a great base paired with your favorite toppings. I would highly suggest having your topping ready on a plate beside the bbq, trust me this is a fast process. Do not do what I did and put the tomato sauce on the dough before grilling on the bbq. Soggy dough and bbq don’t like each other, and neither will your partner that has to clean up the mess. LOL

Ingredients

  • Dough Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup of warm water
  • 1/2 tsp active yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
  • salt to taste
  • Pizza Toppings
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • Tomato sauce or Pesto
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Basil, fresh

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill
  2. In a large bowl, combine yeast and water. Let sit for about 10 mins until it gets foamy.
  3. In the meantime, prepare your toppings and have them ready on a plate.
  4. Flour your workplace.
  5. Add flour and salt to large bowl.
  6. Using your hands combine dough until it is well combined and knead dough for about 5 minutes.
  7. Roll dough out to your desired thickness
  8. brush one side of the dough with olive oil and lay down on the gill. Brush the top of the dough with olive oil. Grill for approximately 2-3 minutes and flip and grill for another 2-3 minutes with lid up.
  9. Spread a thin layer of sauce and dress with your favorite toppings
  10. Close the lid and cook for an addition 3-5 minutes.
  11. Let cool for a few minutes and slice.

Notes

you could substitute 1/2 the flour for whole wheat flour
you could add dried herbs to the flour for extra flavor
